2024 Caterpillar ET (Electronic Technician) Software Overview, Compatibility & Features

What is Caterpillar ET Software?

Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) is dealer-level diagnostic software designed for servicing and troubleshooting Caterpillar (CAT) engines and equipment. It provides access to ECUs (Electronic Control Units) to read fault codes, adjust parameters, perform calibrations, and update software.

What Does Caterpillar ET Do?

  • Read & Clear Fault Codes – View active and stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • Live Data Monitoring
  • Track real-time engine and machine parameters (RPM, fuel pressure, temperatures, etc.).
  • Parameter Programming & Adjustments
  • Modify settings like idle speed, governor limits, and emissions controls.
  •  Injector Coding & Fuel System Diagnostics
  • Perform injector tests, cylinder cutouts, and recalibration.
  • Forced DPF Regen & Aftertreatment Maintenance
  • Manage Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems.
  • Transmission & Hydraulic System Calibration
  • Adjust electronic transmissions and hydraulic controls in CAT machines.
  • ECU Flash Programming & Updates
  • Install new firmware or reprogram control modules.
  • Throttle & Sensor Calibration
  • Adjust throttle position sensors, boost sensors, and other components.

Compatible Brands & Equipment

Caterpillar ET is designed for Caterpillar-powered vehicles, machinery, and some OEM applications.

Supported Engines & Equipment:

  • Caterpillar On-Highway Truck Engines
  • C7, C9, C10, C12, C13, C15, C16, 3406E, 3126, 3176, etc.
  • Caterpillar Off-Highway & Industrial Engines Used in mining, marine, agriculture, and construction.
  • Caterpillar Heavy Equipment Excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, scrapers, and backhoes.
  • CAT Power Systems Generators, marine engines, and industrial power plants.
  • OEM Equipment with CAT Engines
  • Some Komatsu, John Deere, and other brands that use Caterpillar powertrains.

Limited Support for:

  • Some Perkins engines (Perkins is a CAT subsidiary, but requires Perkins EST software for full support).
  • Certain Navistar and Freightliner trucks with CAT engines.

System Requirements & Adapter Compatibility

  • Operating System: Windows 10/11 (64-bit recommended)
  • Hardware: 4GB+ RAM, 20GB free disk space, Intel i5 or better processor

Communication Adapters:

  • CAT Communication Adapter III (Preferred for full functionality)
  • Nexiq USB Link 2 & 3 (Limited support)
  •  Other RP1210-compliant adapters (DPA5, Noregon JPRO, etc.)

Additional Tools & Software

  • CAT SIS (Service Information System) Repair manuals & wiring diagrams.
  • CAT Flash Files For ECM updates and reprogramming.
  • JPRO Commercial Diagnostics May work with CAT truck engines but lacks advanced features like injector coding.

 Using CAT ET Software

  1. Reading & Clearing Fault Codes
  2.  Go to Active Faults view real-time diagnostic trouble codes.
  3. Click Historical Faults for past stored codes
  4.  Select a fault code to view detailed troubleshooting steps.
  5. Click Clear Fault Codes if the issue has been resolved).

Live Data Monitoring

  1. Select Screen, live data to monitor:
  • Engine RPM
  • Boost Pressure
  • Fuel Pressure & Temperature
  •  Exhaust Aftertreatment System (DEF, DPF)
  • Transmission & Hydraulic Data (if applicable)

Performing Injector Coding & Cylinder Cutout Tests

1. Navigate to Injector Calibration & Tests

2. Choose Cylinder Cutout Test to disable injectors one by one (used for misfire diagnosis).

3. If installing new injectors, enter new trim codes (found on the injector body).

Forced DPF Regen (Aftertreatment System Maintenance)

1. Go to  After Treatment Service Menu

2. Select DPF Regeneration to manually start a forced regen.

3. Monitor exhaust temperature & soot level during the process.

4. If faults remain, check DEF system sensors for additional issues.

Transmission & Hydraulic Calibration

Available for CAT hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, graders, and bulldozers.

Select Hydraulic & Transmission Tests to adjust shift points and pressure settings.

ECM Flash Programming & Software Updates

1. Download the correct flash file from CAT SIS or dealer network.

2. Navigate to ECM Reprogramming in ET.

3. Load the flash file and follow on-screen instructions to update the ECM.
